Royal High School Bath – Main Reception
A More Welcoming Arrival
Alongside the creation of the new Middle School at Royal High School Bath, 310 Studio were also commissioned to remodel the main entrance and reception at the school, doubling the size of the existing reception and creating a more welcoming, comfortable and functional first point of contact for pupils, parents and visitors.
The design removes an existing dividing screen and reinstates the original Victorian proportions of the space. A new lighting strategy, material palette and colour scheme further enhance the historic character of the original volume.
A bespoke reception desk accommodating sit stand facilities for the receptionist and integrating the ID check in infrastructure help define the enlarged space without dominating it, while integrated planting, lighting and carefully considered school branding create a warmer and more characterful environment.
Designed for Visitors
Particular attention was given to how parents and visitors use the reception throughout the school day. Comfortable lounge seating sits alongside flexible touchdown spaces, providing places to wait, meet or work, while a new coffee station and integrated digital displays further improve the visitor experience.
Practical improvements were incorporated discreetly into the design, including a removable enclosure around the existing glazed entrance door to reduce draughts and make the adjoining seating area more comfortable.
Together, the interventions transform the school’s principal entrance into a brighter, more generous and welcoming space that better reflects the character of Royal High School Bath.
