Royal High School Bath – Middle School

Creating a New Home for the Middle School

Working with the Girls’ Day School Trust, this project creates a new Middle School at Royal High School Bath, providing a dedicated home for Years 5 and 6 within the main school campus.

The project is located within an existing 1960’s extension to the school and involved judicious and careful intervention and interior redesign of existing spaces.

The transformation brings together a welcoming new entrance and arrival space, remodelled classrooms and a dedicated outdoor courtyard. Designed around the needs of younger pupils, the new spaces provide a nurturing and age-appropriate environment while enabling pupils to benefit from the specialist teaching, facilities and opportunities of the wider school.

A Welcoming Sense of Identity

At the heart of the project is the creation of a distinct identity for the Middle School. A new entrance provides a clear and welcoming point of arrival, with warm timber finishes, integrated seating, bold graphics and colour creating an immediate sense of belonging.

Internally, the remodelled spaces continue this approach, combining character and warmth with flexible, practical learning environments. The design creates spaces where pupils can feel confident and supported while remaining connected to the life of the wider school.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The project also transforms a previously under used courtyard into a dedicated outdoor space for play, socialising and quieter moments throughout the school day. New decking, integrated seating, planting, colourful graphics and a climbing wall create an engaging setting at the centre of the existing historic buildings.

Together, these interventions give the Middle School its own recognisable home within Royal High School Bath, supporting the school’s ambition to create stronger connections across year groups and a continuous educational journey founded on confidence, curiosity and connection.
