Howell's School - Sixth Form

Revitalizing a Historic Learning Space
Working with the Girls Day School Trust, this project focuses on transforming the first-floor interiors above the dining hall at Howell’s School in Cardiff. Previously home to the staff area and careers library, this historic space will be reimagined to meet the modern educational needs of the Sixth Form students and staff. The sensitive remodelling creates a suite of vibrant new classrooms, study areas, and staff offices that balance the functional needs of a contemporary school environment with the preservation of an important piece of architectural history. The careful detailing and respect for the original fabric of the building will ensure this project provides inspiring learning spaces whilst also serving to preserve and enhance the spirit of Howell’s School, celebrating its extraordinary heritage for generations to come.

Respecting the Past, Enhancing the Future
At the heart of the design is a commitment to working harmoniously with the existing fabric of the Grade 2* listed building. Alterations are kept to a minimum, ensuring the new spaces remain sensitive to their heritage context while being functional and fit for purpose. Where previous modifications have been unsympathetic, such as poorly executed mechanical and electrical services, these will be rectified with carefully considered replacements that restore the integrity of the original design.

Thoughtful Interventions and Modern Upgrades
The proposed works include reconfiguring spaces to provide three Sixth Form classrooms, dedicated study and learning support areas, a staff office, and improved WC facilities. Alongside these changes, the project will focus on repairing internal lime plasterwork, restoring original surfaces, and rationalizing the building’s services, including modernizing electrical and heating systems. Non-original light fittings will be replaced with fixtures that better complement the building’s character, while a full internal redecoration will breathe new life into this cherished space.
