Oriel House

A sensitive rear and second-floor extension has been added to this semi-detached Victorian property, located on one of Fulham’s iconic Alphabet Streets.

The design thoughtfully balances modern and heritage elements, addressing the clients’ desire for enhanced views and the dynamic interplay of light through carefully oriented glazing. Bespoke structural glazing is featured prominently at both the beginning and end of the property’s spatial journey. At the rear, an "up-and-over" oriel window extends from the new extension, framing a picturesque view of an ornamental pomegranate tree in the garden and creating a visual axis from the front entrance. On the top floor, a cranked eaves rooflight floods the main staircase down through the property with natural light, tying the spaces together.

The rear extension introduces a spacious open-plan living area with improved connectivity to the garden, while the second-floor addition provides a much-needed home office, complete with views of Craven Cottage! The project not only integrates contemporary and traditional design elements but also prioritizes sustainability. Solar panels and an air source heat pump enable the property to be heated entirely with renewable energy, setting a new standard for sustainable living in a conservation area.
