Bespoke Guard Rail - Wellcome Collection

310studio was tasked with crafting a custom guardrail solution for the central staircase at the Wellcome Collection. Recognising that the original staircase and handrail did not meet modern safety standards, and considering the staircase's high foot traffic and diverse visitor demographics, Wellcome Collection sought to elevate the railing height for enhanced safety.

In preserving the integrity of the historic handrail and stone cladding, which prohibited any alterations to the original structure, we devised a solution utilising a clamping system that attaches to the existing cast-iron handrail fixings, seamlessly extending the guardrail to meet safety requirements while maintaining aesthetic harmony with the brass finish of the original handrail. The vertical connection stanchions introduce a contemporary touch, subtly acknowledging the new addition while blending into the background.

Extensive testing was conducted to ensure the durability and stability of the guardrail and its integration with the existing fittings, guaranteeing its ability to withstand all applied forces.
